SIF® stands for "Schools Interoperability Framework". In a nutshell, it's a technology industry initiative to develop an open specification that will allow K-12 instructional and administrative software applications to work together more effectively. SIF® is not linked to any particular operating system or platform, and will enable diverse applications to interact and share data seamlessly.
For example, a software application that uses student demographic information cannot share data with a different application that uses the same information. School districtadministrators then have no mechanism for creating reports that consolidate these cross-application data sources. The SIF® initiative solves this problem by defining common data objects and implementing a messaging protocol to move these data objects across different software applications. A meaningful report can now be generated from these two different applications.
SIF® is expected to revolutionize the way information is stored, accessed, updated, and transferred, greatly reducing the administrative burden in schools and creating huge savings in time and money. More importantly, SIF® will aid parents, teachers, students, administrators, school boards, and the community at large by sharing data and enabling them to do what they do best.
